Applications of infectious disease epidemiology, with particular emphasis on the natural history of HIV infection, STDs, HBV, HHV-8 and HIV/HAART-associated metabolic complications.
Research Summary
Dr. Kingsley has been directly involved in unraveling the complex natural history of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) since 1983. As the epidemiologist and Co-Principal Investigator for the Pitt Men's Study, which is a part of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS), he has investigated several key areas of HIV infection including risk factors for sexual transmission, determinants of disease progression, impact of behavioral changes on the AIDS epidemic, predictors of immunologic decline, and the natural history of the AIDS-associated malignancies non-Hodgkins lymphoma and Kaposi's sarcoma. Recently, the metabolic complications of HIV and antiretroviral therapies (dyslipidemia, insulin resistance/diabetes mellitus) have raised awareness of the potential for increased cardiovascular disease risk. These metabolic problems have become a major component of the MACS Metabolic Working Group which Dr Kingsley chairs. Additional active research interests include hepatitis B virus, otitis media and bacterial pneumonia.
