HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, community organizing, and public health
Dr. Beatty's research focuses on HIV prevention, particularly as it relates to substance abuse and sexual minorities.
In addition, he facilitates the Pennsylvania HIV Prevention Community Planning Committee for the Pennsylvania Department of Health CDC funded HIV prevention community planning group. This forty member statewide Committee creates the annual HIV prevention plan for the Commonwealth not including Philadelphia.
Dr. Beatty is a founding faculty member of the Masters in Public Health Communicable Disease Behavioral Health Sciences program as well as the Center for Research on Health and Sexual Orientation at the Graduate School of Public Health.
Dr. Beatty has been a member of the National Association of Lesbian and Gay Addiction Professionals-Serving the LGBT Communities since 1979 and served President from 1997-2002. He worked with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) developing a technical assistance publication on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender substance abuse treatment in the clinical, administrative/policy, and research arenas published in the fall of 2000. In addition,he assisted in the writing of CSAT Treatment Improvement Protocol on Mens Health and Substance Abuse to be published in 2004. He also organized and facilitated a national group to develop Chapter 26 Substance Abuse for the Healthy People 2010 Companion Document for the LGBT Communities published in the spring of 2001. In addition, Dr. Beatty is the Chair of the Community Advisory Board of the University of Pittsburgh Pitt Treatment Evaluation Unit-the AIDS Clinical Trials Group. He also serves as Co-Chair of the University Senate Commonwealth Relations Committee for 2007-08. Dr. Beatty is a member of the Board of Directors of the Shepherd Wellness Community serving persons affected and infected with HIV since 1987.
Dr. Beatty is a member of the Program Improvement Collaborative Committee for the Institute for Research, Education, and Training in Addictions (IRETA) providing LGBT expertise to the program. In addition, Dr. Beatty teaches about LGBT subtance use for incoming medical students of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine through the IRETA Scaife Advanced Medical Student Assistantship in Alcohol and Other Drug Dependency.
Dr. Beatty also provides process and outcome evaluation technical assistance to the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force CDC grant, "Prevention for Positives" (PPI) implementing the Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Interventions (DEBI) Rapid Testing, Voices/VOCES and Popular Opinion Leader HIV prevention interventions. In addition, he provides technical assistance on community needs assessment to the Task Force SAMHSA grant, "Partnership for Intervention and Empowerment" (PIE) a community collaboration with Persad Center, The Graduate School of Public Health and the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion developing interventions for prevention of substance use, HIV and Hepatitis C in three public housing communities of Pittsburgh, PA.
Served as a volunteer consultant for the American Psychological Association, Behavioral Social Services Volunteer program providing evidence-based theory and outcome evaluation for a faith-based HIV prevention program within a substance abuse program, STRENGTH, Inc, Pittsburgh, PA.
