Real-time PCR for measuring Epstein-Barr Virus DNA load in transplant patients; Streptococcus pyogenes and viruses including rhinovirus as agents of common cold; Infectious Agents of Persistent Cough
Dr. Wadowsky is interested in determining if Streptococcus pyogenes causes a common cold syndrome in children. Streptococcus pyogenes is an important cause of "Strep throat" and accurate detection of this bacterium facilitates prompt treatment and prevention of serious sequellae. Dr. Wadowsky has received funding from the Research Advisory Committee of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh to develop a multiplex real time PCR assay to detect rhinoviruses in respiratory secretions. This work is expected to lead to the availability of a diagnostic test that can be used to exclude the presence of rhinoviruses in respiratory tract secretions. Dr. Wadowsky is also interested in exploring the application of quantitative real time PCR for monitoring Epstein Barr virus DNA load in blood specimens from transplant patients and the value of this test for diagnosing infectious mononucleosis. He is also interested in studying ways in which to improve the diagnosis of respiratory tract infection caused by fastidious bacteria including Bordetella pertussis, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Dr. Wadowsky is also Director of Pediatric Molecular Microbiology and Consultant in Diagnostic Microbiology at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is responsible for developing molecular assays to improve the diagnosis of infection in children.
