Doctoral Level Applicants and Students
For doctoral students only, the Department of IDM offers a comprehensive and competitive package to support students
throughout their graduate careers.
Features of our package include the following:
Annual Stipend
We support all of our doctoral students throughout their careers. As of Fall 2008, the normal level of support is $24,650/year.
For the first two semesters, the Department provides this support, independent of any teaching or research commitment
by the student.
After the first two semesters, the student's faculty research advisor provides support.
Health Insurance
The University of Pittsburgh provides excellent health insurance options, providing every student with complete medical
coverage free of charge; supplementary dental and vision plans are also available. Spouses and children can be
included in our
medical plans at very reasonable costs.
Tuition Waivers
Graduate tuition can be expensive. In our program, tuition is paid in full each and every semester.
Depending on your course load
and residency
status, this benefit can amount to over $16,000 per semester.
Fellowship Opportunities
There are many fellowship opportunities that provide for financial compensation, as well as provide excellent additions to a
glowing CV. The Graduate
School of Public Health maintains a list of fellowship opportunities on their website.
Master Level Applicants and Students
Outside funding opportunities, as well as a multitude of financial aid packages are available for master level students.
A limited number of partial scholarships are available to outstanding matriculated first year MS and MPH students. For more information

Information on Federal and State student loans is available on the University's Admissions and Financial Aid Web site.
For all students completing
the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) please note that you also must complete the
University of Pittsburgh's Financial Aid Application Supplement
(FAAS) available on the Web site listed above. The FAAS form must be
submitted by June 1 to obtain loans for the fall semester. This form is to be submitted completed,
with the exception of
section nine (9), and sent to the Admissions Coordinator, Office of Student Affairs, University of Pittsburgh, Graduate School of Public Health,
130 DeSoto Street, 114 Parran Hall, Pittsburgh, PA 15261.
Benefits to All Students
All IDM students receive the benefits and perks of being a Pitt student. Such benefits include free transportation via the
Port Authority of Allegheny County,
access to student health services and University fitness centers, free & reduced admission to
museums and cultural events on campus and in Pittsburgh, all of which is in a city with a low cost of living.
Free Transportation
With much thought to the future, the University of Pittsburgh has arranged for free transportation throughout Allegheny
county via the PAT bus system.
Any bus - any time, any where - is free, including those to downtown and the airport. For more

University Student Health Services
Students who pay the student health service fee each semester are covered from the first day of the semester to the last. Students have access to the
majority of medical services available at the Student Health Service facility at

Cost of Living
Pittsburgh was again ranked America's Most Livable Cities by Places Rated Almanac in 2007 and here's why: The city's cost of living beats similar metro
areas and is 30 percent below the national average. Rent varies considerably from apartment to apartment depending on location, size, and other amenities.
Public transportation is free for all University of Pittsburgh students. The University also has available numerous bike racks on campus and a free bike registration.
